Scripture
“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth.” — Philippians 2:9–10
Message
The name of Jesus is not merely a title or a respectful way to address the Son of God. In Scripture, a name represents identity, authority, and power. When God exalted Jesus and gave Him the name above every name, He established the supreme authority of Christ over every realm of existence—heaven, earth, and the spiritual world.
This authority was demonstrated throughout the ministry of the early church. The apostles did not rely on personal ability or influence. Instead, they acted in the authority of Jesus’ name. When Peter encountered the lame man at the temple gate, he did not offer sympathy or wealth. He declared, “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk” (Acts 3:6). Immediately, the man was healed. The miracle was not the result of human power but the authority carried in the name of Jesus.
To pray or act in the name of Jesus means more than attaching His name to the end of a prayer. It means approaching God with the authority of Christ and aligning with His will and character. Just as a representative acts on behalf of a king, believers act on behalf of Christ when they invoke His name in faith.
The power of the name of Jesus also extends over spiritual darkness. Throughout the Gospels and the book of Acts, demons recognized and feared His authority. When believers stand in the authority of Christ, they are not relying on personal strength but on the victory Jesus secured through His death and resurrection. Colossians 2:15 declares that Christ disarmed principalities and powers, triumphing over them through the cross.
However, the authority of Jesus’ name flows most effectively through lives that are surrendered to Him. The name is not a formula or magical phrase; it is the expression of a living relationship with Christ. When believers walk in obedience and faith, the authority of His name becomes active in their prayers, their words, and their ministry.
The world may not recognize the power of this name, but heaven and the spiritual realm do. At the name of Jesus, chains are broken, hearts are transformed, sickness is confronted, and darkness retreats. The authority does not belong to us—it belongs to Him—but through faith we are invited to participate in that authority.
Golden Nugget
The power of the name of Jesus is not in the sound of the words but in the authority of the risen Christ behind that name.
