Preparing Hearts to Possess the Promise
Today, we turn the page from the wilderness into the plains of Moab. The first generation has died off, and now Moses begins his final words to the new generation—those who will cross over into the Promised Land. Before they go in, God wants their hearts renewed, their identity reestablished, and their faith clarified.
Deuteronomy is not just a repetition of the law—it is a call to remember, to obey, and to love.
Reading Instructions
Read Numbers 35–36 and Deuteronomy 1–8 with attentiveness. Observe how God sets up protection through cities of refuge (Numbers 35), resolves issues of inheritance (Numbers 36), and then moves into a passionate call through Moses for the people to listen, remember, and fully surrender to God as they prepare to enter their promise.
Guided Devotional
1. Who is God?
Protector of Justice and Mercy – The cities of refuge (Numbers 35) show that God cares about both protecting the innocent and ensuring justice for the guilty. He provides systems to avoid vengeance and promote fairness.
The God of Remembrance – In Deuteronomy 1–8, Moses reminds the people of everything God has done: deliverance from Egypt, the giving of the Law, victories in battle, and supernatural provision in the wilderness.
The Covenant Keeper – God hasn’t changed His mind. His promises are still alive, but they require obedient hearts.
The Jealous God – He warns Israel not to forget Him in their success (Deuteronomy 6:10–12). He desires exclusive devotion, not partial loyalty.
The Father Who Disciplines and Loves – Just like a father trains his children, God disciplines His people—not out of wrath, but out of love and purpose (Deuteronomy 8:5).
2. What Are the Ways of God?
God speaks to generations differently—He now re-teaches His law to the next generation in a way they can understand and carry.
God confronts fear and unbelief—Deuteronomy 1 recounts how fear cost the previous generation their inheritance. God won’t allow that cycle to repeat.
God blesses obedience but warns against forgetfulness. Memory and gratitude are essential to remaining in covenant.
God defines inheritance with boundaries and equity—this is seen in Numbers 36, where the daughters of Zelophehad protect their family land within God’s instructions.
God builds His people through seasons of testing—not to destroy, but to humble and prepare (Deuteronomy 8:2–3).
3. What Is His Character?
Just – He establishes laws that guard both individuals and communities from chaos or injustice.
Loving – He disciplines as a Father, not a tyrant. His corrections are rooted in affection and purpose.
Faithful – Though one generation failed, He does not cancel the promise. He simply prepares the next.
Wise – God uses the wilderness to teach dependence, character, and faith—so that His people can sustain the blessing.
Holy and Worthy of Total Allegiance – God demands exclusive love and reminds Israel to keep His words on their hearts, hands, and homes (Deuteronomy 6:4–9).
Golden Nugget
God will always take time to prepare your heart before He gives you what He promised. Remembering His ways and walking in obedience is the key to possessing and keeping your inheritance.
Prayer
Father of the Covenant, Thank You for not forgetting Your promise. Thank You for preparing my heart, even in wilderness seasons. Help me to remember what You’ve done, obey what You’ve said, and love You with all my heart, soul, and strength. May I not be like the generation that drew near with their lips but failed in their hearts. Let my obedience be full, joyful, and lasting. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Activation Challenge
Write down five things God has done for you in your past wilderness seasons. Praise Him for His faithfulness.
Reflect: Are there areas where you’ve started to “forget” God in your current comfort? Re-center today.
Read Deuteronomy 6:4–9 aloud as a declaration over your family and future. Commit to loving God fully.

In the next chapters, Moses will challenge Israel to confront pride, remember the source of their blessings, and follow God's instructions in worship, leadership, and justice. We are being shaped for longevity in the land of promise.
