Reading Instructions
Read 2 Samuel 16–24 and 1 Kings 1 slowly and reflectively. These chapters reveal the closing chapters of David’s reign—filled with betrayal, loss, restoration, and divine fulfillment. Let your heart draw near as God reveals what it means to finish well.
Guided Devotional
1. Who is God?
The God Who Upholds His Chosen – Even when David is betrayed by his son Absalom and falsely accused by others, God sustains him and gives him victory.
The God of Justice and Mercy – God avenges wrongs and disciplines disobedience, but He also shows mercy to the humble and repentant.
The God of Destiny – God orchestrates the transition of leadership from David to Solomon, ensuring His purposes are established despite political chaos.
2. What Are the Ways of God?
God uses trials to refine character – David’s exile during Absalom’s rebellion strips him of human reliance and teaches him deeper trust in God.
God exalts the humble and brings down the proud – Absalom, though charming and popular, is brought to a tragic end. Meanwhile, David is restored.
God prepares the next generation – 1 Kings 1 shows us God’s hand in preparing Solomon to take the throne, affirming that legacy is not accidental but intentional.
3. What Is His Character?
Faithful – Even when David faltered, God remained faithful to His promises and covenant.
Sovereign – God raises and removes leaders, works through advisors and prophets, and governs the unfolding of history.
Compassionate – God’s dealings with David, even in judgment, are filled with compassion. He hears his cries, receives his repentance, and grants restoration.
