Today’s Reading: Job 28–37
Date: Saturday, 16th August 2025
The Story Behind the Story
Job pauses the heated debates to reflect on the mystery of wisdom. In a world where men mine deep into the earth for precious metals, true wisdom cannot be unearthed by human effort—it comes only from God. As Job affirms, “The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.”
The narrative shifts as a new voice enters—Elihu, younger than the other friends but burning with zeal. He challenges Job for justifying himself more than God and rebukes the older friends for failing to answer Job’s cries. Elihu speaks of God’s greatness, His justice, and His purposes in allowing suffering—pointing toward the truth that God speaks through both blessing and pain.
Reading Instructions
Read Job 28 slowly, as a poetic jewel in the middle of the book, absorbing its vision of God as the sole source of wisdom. Then read Job 29–37, noting how Job longs for the days of blessing and how Elihu’s perspective shifts the tone toward God’s coming reply.
Guided Devotional
1. Who Is God?
The Source of All Wisdom – True understanding flows from Him alone, not from human speculation.
The God Who Speaks Through Many Means – He whispers in blessing, warns in suffering, and instructs in trials.
The God Who Is Just in All His Ways – Even when He allows hardship, His purposes remain righteous.
2. What Are the Ways of God?
He Defines Wisdom by Relationship – The fear of the Lord is not terror but deep reverence and obedience.
He Uses Trials as a Teacher – Pain is not always punishment; it can be a refining tool.
He Raises Unlikely Voices – Elihu, the youngest, becomes God’s instrument to correct and prepare Job’s heart for a direct encounter.
3. What Is His Character?
Righteous and Pure – His wisdom is without flaw or bias.
Patient and Merciful – He listens to the long debates without rushing to silence them.
Great and Powerful – Elihu paints a portrait of God’s majesty in creation and His unmatched authority over all things.
Golden Nugget
Wisdom is not found in explanations, but in knowing the One who governs all things. Reverence for God and turning from evil is the only sure path to understanding.
Prayer
Lord, You are the source of all wisdom. Teach me to fear You rightly and to walk in Your ways even when I don’t understand my circumstances. Help me receive correction with humility and recognize Your voice, whether it comes through Scripture, people, or life’s trials. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
