Today’s Reading: Psalms 16–25
Date: Tuesday, 19th August 2025
The Story Behind the Story
These psalms shift the tone from cries of desperation to deeper trust and joyful celebration in God’s deliverance. David acknowledges God as his portion, security, and refuge (Psalm 16). He proclaims God as the One who rescues and vindicates (Psalm 17), and he exalts His glory in creation and His perfect Word (Psalm 19).
The central psalms (20–21) are prayers and praises for victory, reminding us that salvation comes not by chariots or human strength but by the Lord. Psalm 22, though born of David’s anguish, prophetically foreshadows Christ’s suffering on the cross, ending with triumph and praise. The sequence closes with Psalm 23—one of the most loved passages in Scripture—where the Shepherd’s care brings comfort, rest, and hope. Psalm 24 and 25 end with themes of God’s kingship, holiness, and covenantal guidance for His people.
Reading Instructions
Read these psalms slowly, listening for the shift from refuge in God to shouts of joy and deliverance. Pay attention especially to Psalm 22’s messianic prophecy and Psalm 23’s intimacy. Ask yourself: Do I run to God as my safe place, and do I live in the joy of His victory?
Guided Devotional
1. Who Is God?
My Refuge and Portion – He alone secures my future and inheritance (Psalm 16).
The Victorious King – He grants victory to His people and establishes His kingdom (Psalms 20–21).
The Good Shepherd – He leads, restores, comforts, and anoints (Psalm 23).
2. What Are the Ways of God?
He Leads His People – Guiding them in truth and teaching them His ways (Psalm 25).
He Reveals Himself – Through creation (Psalm 19) and through His Word, which is perfect, trustworthy, and life-giving.
He Turns Mourning into Praise – Even the psalm of suffering (Psalm 22) ends with hope, pointing us to Christ’s victory.
3. What Is His Character?
Faithful and Unchanging – He keeps covenant with those who fear Him.
Righteous and Holy – His presence demands clean hands and pure hearts (Psalm 24).
Compassionate Shepherd – He never abandons His flock but provides abundantly.
Golden Nugget
God is not only our refuge in times of distress but also the source of our greatest joy. His Word restores the soul, His victory secures our future, and His Shepherd’s care sustains us every day.
