Today’s Reading: Psalms 56–65
Date: Saturday, 23rd August 2025
The Story Behind the Story
These psalms capture the tension between desperate cries for deliverance and confident songs of God’s abundant provision.
Psalm 56 records David’s prayer while under threat, declaring, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.” Psalm 57 rises into praise even in the midst of danger. By Psalm 59, he is asking God to deliver him from bloodthirsty enemies, while Psalm 60 appeals for God’s help in the midst of national conflict.
But the later psalms (61–65) overflow with assurance: God is a strong tower (61), a rock higher than us (62), a God who hears prayer and atones for sin (65). Psalm 65, in particular, bursts with thanksgiving for God’s abundant provision in creation and His blessing on the land.
Together, these psalms reveal a pattern: cries for help often give way to praise and thanksgiving, reminding us that God not only rescues but also satisfies His people.
Reading Instructions
Read Psalms 56–65 carefully, noticing how David brings his fear and need directly to God, then shifts into trust and gratitude. Linger especially on Psalm 62 (“My soul finds rest in God alone”) and Psalm 65 (“You crown the year with Your bounty”). Ask yourself: Do I bring both my fears and my thanksgiving to God with equal honesty?

Lord, when I am afraid, I will trust in You. Thank You for being my rock, my strong tower, and my refuge. Crown my life with Your goodness and let my heart overflow with thanksgiving. May fear give way to faith, and petitions turn into praise. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
